Treatment Techniques
Therapeutic Exercise
Instruction of strengthening and stretching techniques to address foundational imbalances in muscle strength and flexibility. Therapeutic exercise leads to improved support of joints and reduction in overuse injuries by ensuring that muscles fire symetrically and optimally based on principles of biomechanics.
Neuromuscular Re-Education
Techniques designed to re-train the flexible neuroconnections between the brain and muscles. This includes training new posture habits, teaching new muscles to activate during specific movements, and improving subconscious muscle firing to improve balance and stability. This also includes treatment strategies designed to re-write pain neuropathways in order to interrupt chronic pain cycles and reduce neural hypersensitivity.
Hands-On Manual Therapy
Techniques designed to relax soft tissue structures for reduction of pain and greater range of movement. Includes hands-on massage of muscles, metal tool scraping massage (sometimes called a “Graston” tool), manually assisted stretching, and manual mobilization of stiff joint capsules.
Cupping Therapy
A technique borrowed from traditional East Asian Medicine, cupping involves placing a silicon or plastic cup on the skin and removing air from the cup, creating a vacuum. This lifts, stretches, and brings blood flow to the soft tissue, promoting tissue healing and muscle relaxation. Many compare the sensation to a deep tissue massage.
Blood Flow Restriction Therapy (BFR)
Blood Flow Restriction Therapy causes quick fatigue of muscles leading to significant improvement in muscle strength. A tight cuff is placed around the limb which restricts blood flow to targeted muscles. Muscles reach fatigue point quickly in low-oxygen environments, leading to rapid gains in muscle strength with significantly fewer repetitions. BFR is especially effective for addressing muscle strength asymmetries, muscle atrophy following surgery, and cases where joints cannot tolerate heavy resistance or impact.
Equipment and Environment Assessments
Assessment of your anatomy and posture with the goal of recommending equipment or environmental modifications that are tailored to your specific needs. This includes a wide variety of areas such as running shoe recommendations, ergonomic workspace set-up, or assessing the best type of pillow to sleep with, with the goal of optimally supporting joints throughout an activity.
If you are specifically interested in cupping or BFR, let me know during the initial evaluation and I can ensure that we prioritize those techniques during your sessions.
I utilize a combination of the below treatment techniques depending on your unique needs, to best address the root cause of your condition rather than simply soothing surface symptoms.
